How to attach plastic safety eyes or noses on a Teddy Bear or Plush Toy:
Ever have difficulty pushing the little washer onto the post for plastic safety eyes or noses?
Things You'll Need:
- teddy bear or plush toy needing a nose or eyes
- plastic safety eyes (or nose) with plastic washers
- small container of boiling water
- tweezers or haemostat
Place the washer (the little plastic disk) into the container of very hot water. Leave it there for at least 5 minutes to soften the plastic.

Now remove the washer CAREFULLY from the hot water.
It's a good idea to use tweezers or a haemostat to get it out of the water.

NOTE: If your washer has a cup shape, the post goes into the concave side. Run the post of the nose through the correct position on the teddy bear, then press the hot washer onto the post on the inside of the bear. If you are quick, it should still be maleable from the heat.
DO NOT press the washer all the way yet...
... First, turn the head right side out and ensure it is positioned where you want it before you press the washer all the way on.
Voila!
NOTE: Before you press the washer the final few millimetres, make sure you turn the teddy bear head right side out and check that the eyes or nose are positioned exactly where you want it. Otherwise, you may end up with a securely fastened nose turned upside down or at an angle!

DeleteThank you very much for your very useful information about the plastic eyes and washers. This is my first time for using eyes and nose on a knitted bear that I have made. I am no real expert on making of bears, in fact this is the second bear that I have made and are enjoying doing this process easily. I am thinking of writing to Sullivans (manufactor) of the eyes/nose that I am using and request that they insert guidelines for use in their packaging. I wasn't sure at all on how to use. So thankfully that I have an internet connection. So now I am thanking you again for your wonderful information on how to use them. The eyes washers are now soaking! I've decided to follow you and when I am finished I will be happy to send you a picture of my bear.

Do you have any tips for attaching the metal washers that come with some of the safety eyes?
ReplyDeleteHi there. I have always struggled to attach noses and eyes so was really pleased when I saw your tip on how its done. But sadly...have tried to attach the nose to my knitted teddy bear 3 times now without success. I followed your instructions, as did my daughter but we simply have not b een able to get the washer on. Any ideas as to why>
